Advocacy on Motorcycle Helmet Law Repeal
Unfortunately, senate bill 202 has passed the house, and now only Governor Nixon’s veto will stop Missouri from enacting legislation that repeals the mandatory motorcycle helmet law.

If you are interested in telling the governor your feelings about this, you only have to go to this website: http://governor.mo.gov/constituents/

Mention SB 202 in the subject line. PIP has also developed a template you can use to write your message to the governor.

Primary Seat Belt Legislation

Here are some important documents to help you show support (from your coalition/campus as well as personally) for the primary seat belt law (HB 665).

Campus and Community Environment and Policy Survey

Below is the link to the 2008 Campus Community Environmental Policy Survey (CCEPS) on Surveymonkey. As in previous years, we are requesting that one contact from each campus complete this survey. If you are that contact, please complete this survey before January 11, 2009. Every year the CCEPS provides us with incredibly valuable information and we look forward to more of the same with this version. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=pSTRlxYrllnxBNKpL3jKcA_3d_3d

MARK YOUR CALENDARS : COMING THIS SPRING: Train the Trainer for STEP UP! – Be a Leader, Make a Difference

Join us for a one-hour Webinar to explain how to use “STEP UP! Be a Leader, Make a Difference.”

Copies of the STEP UP! facilitators guide and student-athlete guides were sent out to all CHAMPS/Life Skills Coordinators this fall to provide you a proven effective strategy to address bystander behaviors. STEP UP! trains your student-athletes to safely and effectively intervene with their teammates and friends when they see one in need. In order to assist you in conducting this training with your student-athletes, we are scheduling one hour Webinars conducted by Becky Bell from the University of Arizona, who was the driving force behind STEP UP! Becky has conducted the training with administrators and student-athletes with great success.

Most of the problems we see are preventable with bystander intervention!

Step Up! is the first interdisciplinary program of its kind. Instead of doing multiple workshops or seminars on topics such as alcohol, hazing, sexual assault, depression, eating disorders, etc., STEP UP! provides an approach that can be applied to virtually any problematic situation. The guides include warning signs, action steps and resources for many different topics as well as scenarios and additional activities you can use with your students. The videos and other interactive elements make for a unique, interesting and educational program – and one that can change lives. Please invite any campus constituents with whom you work that might be interested. This training has been done with Greek Life, Residence Life and other leadership groups on campus. Co-presenting can be effective and fun as well!

You can join the Webinar on one of the following times:

All Webinars are schedule to begin at 1 ET, noon CT, 11 MT and 10 PT.

To sign up please contact Becky Bell bell@email.arizona.edu

Missouri College Health Behavior Survey

Timeline for MCHBS

During the months of September, October and November, the following tasks should be completed:

The MCHBS 2009 draft will be given to you to append to your IRB applications as soon as it is finalized. During the spring semester of 2009 you will begin surveying your students. You are given the choice of anytime during the semester before May 1st; as always, you will need to make sure that this window of time is not within two weeks of a major holiday or Spring Break. In years past, it has been found that the surveys that go out earlier in the semester have higher response rates. Completing the IRB process during the Fall and preparing for an early start date will make this a possibility.
